What handlers are and how to add them
Understand what a handler is, why their name is printed on the label, and how to set up your list.
Updated on
A handler is the name of the person who prepared the item, and it is printed on the label. It’s whoever is responsible for handling that perishable: the cook, the bartender, the server. Whenever you create a label, you pick a handler from the list — and their name appears on the print, ensuring traceability of who did what.
A handler is not the same as a user
These are two different things:
- A user has a login to EtiquetaChef and a role (Owner, Manager or Staff). They access the system.
- A handler is just a name that goes on the label. They can be someone who never uses the app — for example, a kitchen helper who never touches the tablet.
Who can manage them
Only the Owner adds and manages the handler list. The Manager and Staff see the result — they choose a handler when creating a label — but they don’t edit the list.
How to add a handler
In the web dashboard, open Handlers and click New handler.
-
Give the handler a name
Type the name of the person who will appear on the label. Use a clear name, exactly the way you want it printed.
-
Save
The handler is created active and ready to be chosen when creating labels.
-
Set the default (optional)
Mark a handler as the default so it comes pre-selected when creating a label. Only one handler is the default at a time.
Activate, deactivate and delete
- Deactivate: a handler who left the team can be deactivated. They stop appearing in the picker when creating labels but remain preserved on older labels.
- Delete: you can only delete a handler that was never used on any label. If they already appeared on a label, deletion is blocked — in that case, deactivate instead of deleting.
At least one active handler
To create labels you need at least one active handler. If the list has no active handler, the label creation screen warns you and submission stays blocked until the Owner adds one.
